The Animal Welfare Alliance gets a parcel of land for a new shelter

Oct 01, 2012 -- 11:20pm

The Animal Welfare Alliance has bought a one-acre parcel of land north of Poplar Bluff to build a new “no kill” shelter in the next two years.  The group will need to demolish an abandoned building on that site and then rebuild the new shelter on the 6-thousand square feet of concrete foundation.  AWA will soon launch a capital campaign and apply for grants to pay for the construction and initial operations.  Group president Charlotte Craig tells KZIM KSIM the tough economy has led to more and more animals needing a home.  Craig says they will continue buying vaccines for dogs and cats in the city pound and provide vouchers for low-income families to spay and neuter their pets.  They spend about 600-dollars per month on these services.  You can help donate to the cause at www-dot-awasemo-dot-org or call 573-857-2660.
