Fire strikes an abandoned house on South Hanover…
A fire Monday night on South Hanover Street required all on-duty Cape Girardeau firefighters and help from surrounding departments. Crews responded to a single-story house at 534 S. Hanover St. after a neighbor called 9-1-1 around 5:30 pm. Cape Girardeau fire chief Rick Ennis says Scott City firefighters helped bring the fire under control. Jackson and off-duty Cape Girardeau firefighters were also called to fill in. Neighbors said no one has lived in the house for months. It is surrounded by two unoccupied houses and a vacant lot. Neighbors said they heard a popping sound and saw smoke coming out the back of the house. The back half of the home was engulfed in flames when crews arrived. The cause is under investigation.
