A Pemiscot County man is jailed for striking a young child

A Pemiscot County girl has died and a Bragg City man is in jail for allegedly striking the 2-year-old child twice in the face. Deputies responded to the home at 7 AM Wednesday in response to a child not breathing. The girl was flown by air ambulance to Lebonheur Children's Hospital in Memphis, where she died at 12:25 Thursday. The mother originally told authorities that she and her daughter were involved in an ATV wreck around 6 the same morning. After receiving conflicting stories, law enforcement began a criminal investigation. Officials learned the ATV story was false and that the mother's boyfriend had struck the child in the face with his fist. 23-year-old Matthew Taylor was first charged with assault in the 1st-degree. But the prosecutor will amend that to 2nd-degree murder. Taylor appeared in court Thursday morning. He remains jailed on a 200-thousand-dollar bond and will be back before Judge Byron Luber on the 15th.
